EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of "Khamza" by Jamal al-Din Abu Muhammad Nizami, a renowned Persian artist from the 12th century. The painting, created in 1651 during the Safavid era in Iran, is a stunning example of Persian manuscript art. Measuring 36x21 cm, this masterpiece is part of a private collection and features intricate details painted with pigments and gold on buff paper. The manuscript consists of 303 folios adorned with four fly-leaves, each displaying neat black nasta'liq calligraphy arranged in columns outlined with gold. Titles are written in red ink throughout the text. The illuminated headpiece on f. 1b adds an ethereal touch to the composition, composed of polychrome flowers and interlaced split-palmettes embellished with gold strapwork borders. Additionally, five more illuminated headpieces enhance the visual appeal within this poetic manuscript. Twenty-eight contemporaneous miniatures grace its pages using opaque pigments heightened with gold. These miniature paintings depict various scenes including figures in gardens and women kneeling, illustrating poems written by Nizami Ganjavi. The colophon at the end bears Ibn Husayn Murad Ali Damavandi's signature along with its date: Thursday at the beginning of Rabi I AH 1061 or February 1651 AD. Preserved beautifully despite some flaking paint and light staining over time, this remarkable piece is housed in a brown morocco binding featuring a lacquered central lobed cartouche. Bridgeman Images has masterfully captured this enchanting artwork through their lens for all art enthusiasts to appreciate and admire.
