5924209 Panorama of Kabul viewed from the Bala Burj, 1879 (b/w photo) by Burke, John (fl.1878-79); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Panorama of Kabul viewed from the Bala Burj, 1879.
Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879.
The Afghan capital is visible to the left of this photograph of the Bala Burj, one of a set of three that formed a panorama of Kabul. The panorama was an extremely difficult technique to execute at this time. Matching lines, exposure and lighting required the highest degree of skill from the photographer. In his series of panoramic views of Kabul, however, Burke showed himself a master of the art form.
