EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, titled "Robert Owen, 1834" captures the essence of a remarkable man who left an indelible mark on history. Painted by William Henry Brooke, this oil on canvas print measures 27.3x21.6 cm and is housed in the prestigious National Portrait Gallery in London. The subject of this painting is Robert Owen (1771-1858), a Welsh social reformer and one of the pioneers of Socialism and cooperative movement. Known for his socialist principles, Owen ran the New Lanark mill with great success before attempting to establish the New Harmony Society in Indiana, USA. In 1832, Owen proposed that unions should unite, leading to the formation of the Grand National Consolidated Trade Union in 1834. However, when six agricultural workers from Tolpuddle were arrested for forming a union shortly after its establishment, it marked a turning point. Despite Owen's efforts to carry a petition during a march from Copenhagen Fields on April 21st that year - which was ultimately refused - the union collapsed by August. This portrait showcases not only Robert Owen's political influence but also his moral and ethical stance as an entrepreneur and philanthropist. With his visionary ideas about worker rights and cooperative societies, he became an influential figure within labor movements such as chartism. Through this painting by Bridgeman Images from Fine Art Finder, we are reminded of Robert Owen's significant contributions as both a pioneer and idealist who sought to create utopian societies based on cooperation rather than exploitation.
