Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879.
In February 1879 Yakub Khan succeeded his father, Sher Ali, as amir of Afghanistan. With the fighting the previous year having established British troops in Kandahar, the Kurram Valley and Jalalabad, Yakub Khan decided to negotiate. On 8 May 1879 he arrived at Gandamak in eastern Afghanistan to sign a peace treaty with the British. To impress upon him the extent of Britains military power, the road by which he approached Gandamak was lined with troops; in all, 4750 men were on parade. By the Treaty of Gandamak, signed on 26 May, Yakub Khan ceded the Kurram Valley and Khyber Pass, and by accepting a British mission to Kabul, surrendered control of Afghanistans foreign policy.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures an important historical moment at Amir Yakhub Khan's camp, where the Treaty of Gandamak was signed in May 1879. Taken by an unknown photographer during the 19th century, this image is now housed in the National Army Museum in London. The photograph showcases the campsite where Amir Yakhub Khan arrived to negotiate peace with British forces after succeeding his father as amir of Afghanistan. To demonstrate their military power, a road leading to Gandamak was lined with troops, totaling 4750 men on parade. This display aimed to impress upon Khan the extent of Britain's might. On May 26th, 1879, Yakub Khan signed the Treaty of Gandamak. As part of this agreement, he ceded control over strategic territories such as the Kurram Valley and Khyber Pass. Additionally, by accepting a British mission to Kabul, he relinquished control over Afghanistan's foreign policy. This particular photo is one among a collection of 61 photographs compiled by Lieutenant-Colonel C. A Mercer from the 4th Gurkha Regiment between 1878 and 1880. It offers us a glimpse into a significant event that shaped Afghan-British relations during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880). Now preserved for posterity in digital form thanks to Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder platform, this image allows viewers to reflect on past diplomatic negotiations and their impact on geopolitical landscapes.
