EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of the Women's Battalion in St. Petersburg, 1917. Taken by an anonymous Russian photographer from the 20th century, this image showcases a significant period in Russia's history. Established after the February Revolution, these women's battalions played a crucial role during times of political unrest. The second company of the Petrograd Women's Battalion even participated in defending the Winter Palace on that fateful night of October 24th-25th during the Bolshevik Revolution. In this scene, we see rows of tents set up as makeshift camps for these brave female soldiers. Dressed in their military uniforms and armed with rifles, they stand united against oppression and fight for their beliefs. The laundry hanging nearby adds a touch of everyday life amidst turbulent times. However, despite their valorous efforts, all women's units were disbanded by the Military Council just one month later on November 30th. Nevertheless, this photograph stands as a testament to their unwavering spirit and dedication to revolution. Bridgeman Images has preserved this remarkable piece from its private collection through Calmann & King Ltd. , allowing us to glimpse into this pivotal moment in history where women stood shoulder-to-shoulder with men on the front lines of change.
