Quarries in this area yielded purplish-grey dolomite and white oolite, used as a building stone, and also in the making of cement; this quarry was filled in by 1869 with spoil from the Bristol docks, which were being improved at the time, and there is little trace of its whereabouts today.); © Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives; Purchased with the assistance of The Friends of Bristol Art Gallery in 2010

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a picturesque scene of the Quarry on Durdham Down, dating back to approximately 1865. Painted by William Arnee Frank or attributed to him, this artwork showcases the extensive quarry workings in Bristol during that era. The composition reveals the Observatory, the tower of Dundry church, and even a glimpse of one of the Clifton Suspension Bridge piers in the distance. The quarries depicted here were significant sources of purplish-grey dolomite and white oolite, which were widely used as building stones and for cement production. However, by 1869, this particular quarry had been filled in with spoil from the Bristol docks' improvement works. Today, little evidence remains of its existence. The image exudes a sense of tranquility and pastoral beauty amidst its rural surroundings. The sunny skies illuminate rolling green hills while sheep graze peacefully nearby. This idyllic countryside setting evokes feelings of calmness and serenity. Preserved at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in the UK since its acquisition in 2010 with assistance from The Friends of Bristol Art Gallery, this painting serves as a testament to both historical industrial practices and nature's ability to reclaim man-made landscapes over time.
