EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The American Bison, 1749-73" takes us back in time to the mesmerizing world of nature's wonders. Created by Mark Catesby and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print showcases the collaboration between two talented artists from different eras. Originally engraved by George Edwards, this artwork is a fusion of Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" and Edwards' "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds". Seligmann added his unique touch to the plates, translating names into German and introducing additional figures and plants not present in the originals. This engraving serves as a testament to their significance in North America's natural history. Through its intricate illustrations and historical context, this print invites us to appreciate the rich diversity of wildlife that once thrived on our planet. It reminds us of our responsibility to protect these species for future generations so they too can marvel at nature's extraordinary creations.
