EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The black Indian Cuckow, 1749-73" transports us back to the 18th century world of natural history exploration. Created by George Edwards and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print is a testament to the collaboration between talented artists and their dedication to documenting the wonders of nature. Originally featured in Edwards' renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular piece combines elements from Mark Catesby's work "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". Seligmann skillfully translated names into German while adding his own unique touch with additional figures and plants not found in the original illustrations. The image showcases a striking representation of the black Indian Cuckow (Cuculus indicus niger), capturing its intricate details with remarkable precision. The bird's sleek feathers are beautifully rendered through delicate lines and vibrant colours, bringing it to life on paper. As we admire this exquisite engraving, we are reminded of humanity's enduring fascination with our natural world. It serves as a reminder that even centuries ago, artists like Edwards and Seligmann played an essential role in preserving our understanding of Earth's diverse flora and fauna. Now part of a private collection but made accessible through ePurix Verlag Volker Christen, this artwork continues to inspire awe for both its artistic merit and scientific significance.
