EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Blue Linnet" transports us back to the 18th century when natural history illustrations were highly sought after. Created by Mark Catesby and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print showcases the beauty of a Linaria caerulea, commonly known as the blue linnet. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring this bird to life on paper. The delicate feathers are meticulously depicted, showcasing shades of blue that blend seamlessly with hints of green and yellow. Its slender body perches gracefully on a branch adorned with lush foliage, adding depth and realism to the composition. Originally engraved by George Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, Seligmann took it upon himself to enhance these plates further. He combined them with Catesby's work on Carolina's natural history while translating names into German and introducing additional figures and plants not present in the originals. This print is not only an exquisite example of artistry but also serves as a valuable historical document. It offers us a glimpse into the scientific exploration and fascination with nature during that era. As we admire this beautiful illustration today, we can appreciate both its aesthetic appeal and its contribution to our understanding of avian diversity. Displayed proudly in private collections around the world, this artwork continues to captivate viewers with its timeless charm.
