EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Gowry Bird" a beautifully colored engraving created by George Edwards in 1749-73. The artwork, now part of a private collection, was later re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer from Nuremberg. Originally featured in Edwards' works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History". Seligmann combined the plates with Catesby's work titled "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". Not only did he translate the names into German but also added additional figures and plants that were absent in the original engravings. "The Gowry Bird" is an exquisite representation of avian beauty. Its intricate details capture every feather with precision and delicacy. This enchanting illustration transports viewers to a world where nature's wonders are brought to life through art. With its vibrant colors and meticulous craftsmanship, this print exemplifies the intersection between science and aesthetics during the 18th century. It serves as a testament to both Edwards' keen eye for detail as well as Seligmann's skillful re-engraving techniques. Whether you are an avid bird enthusiast or simply appreciate fine art, this print offers a glimpse into the rich history of natural history illustrations. It reminds us of our enduring fascination with birds, animals, and their place within our ever-evolving understanding of the natural world.
