EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving from 1749-73 showcases the majestic beauty of the great horned owl. Created by George Edwards, a renowned naturalist and illustrator, this print is a testament to his expertise in capturing the essence of uncommon birds. However, it was Michael Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer, who re-engraved Edwards' original work and combined it with Mark Catesby's A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. The result is a stunning piece that not only features accurate depictions of various bird species but also includes German translations for their names. Seligmann went above and beyond by adding additional figures and plants to enhance the overall composition. This collaboration between two talented artists brings together different perspectives on nature's wonders. In this particular print, we see an exquisite portrayal of Otus americanus - the great horned owl. Its piercing yellow eyes seem to penetrate one's soul while its prominent ear tufts give it an air of wisdom and mystery. The intricate details in every feather showcase both Edwards' artistic skill as well as Seligmann's meticulous craftsmanship. Displayed in private collections around the world, this artwork continues to captivate viewers with its timeless beauty. It serves as a reminder of our planet's rich biodiversity and encourages us to appreciate these magnificent creatures that share our world.
