EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The spur-winged Water Hen" in all its vibrant glory. Created by the talented artist George Edwards between 1749 and 1773, this coloured engraving is a true masterpiece of natural history illustration. Originally engraved by Edwards himself for his renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular print has been re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German engraver, illustrator, and art dealer from Nuremberg. Seligmann combined Edwards' plates with the work of Mark Catesby in "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" translating names into German and adding additional figures and plants not present in the originals. "The spur-winged Water Hen" depicted here is scientifically known as Gallinula brasiliensis JACANA dicta alis cornubus donatis. Its unique features include striking spurs on its wings that set it apart from other water hens. This enchanting illustration captures every intricate detail with precision, making it an invaluable resource for bird enthusiasts and lovers of natural history alike. Now preserved in a private collection but made available through ePurix Verlag Volker Christen, this exquisite print allows us to appreciate both the artistic skill involved in creating such illustrations as well as the beauty found within our diverse animal kingdom.
