EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Bronze 2.25 inch model howitzer, dating back to 1786. Created by Claude Martin, a French soldier turned Major-General in the East India Company's forces, this miniature artillery piece is an exquisite example of his craftsmanship. After arriving in India as a private soldier, Martin's talents were quickly recognized, leading him to become Superintendent of the Arsenal for the Nawab of Awadh at Lucknow. It was during this time that he produced numerous exceptional arms for the Nawab, including several small howitzers like the one depicted here. The intricate details and precision evident in this model suggest that it may have served as more than just a decorative item. It is possible that these miniaturized howitzers were intended as working toys for the royal household or perhaps even used for training purposes within their military ranks. Claude Martin's success in India allowed him to amass great wealth, some of which he later utilized to establish La Martiniere College in Lucknow. This educational institution stands today as a testament to his philanthropy and enduring legacy. Through this photograph captured by Bridgeman Images and housed at London's National Army Museum, we are granted a glimpse into history—a moment frozen in time—showcasing both artistic mastery and historical significance.
