The Fall of Richmond, Virginia on the night of April 2nd, 1865
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This colour lithograph captures a pivotal moment in American history - the fall of Richmond, Virginia. The Confederacy's capital had withstood numerous Union assaults, but when General Ulysses S. Grant successfully took Petersburg, President Jefferson Davis made the difficult decision to evacuate Richmond. In this scene depicted by Currier and Ives, we witness the chaos and destruction that ensued as Confederate soldiers set fire to storehouses while fleeing across Mayo Bridge over the James River. The columned portico of the Confederate Capitol stands ominously in the background as smoke billows from blazing warehouses and munitions explode. The image evokes a sense of an apocalyptic escape for both soldiers and residents alike. Carriages are seen racing away from the engulfing flames as people flee their homes amidst scenes of devastation. This lithograph serves as a haunting reminder of not only defeat but also the immense cost paid during one of America's darkest periods - the American Civil War. Just days after this event unfolded, General Robert E. Lee would surrender to Grant at Appomattox Court House, marking a turning point in history. Tragically, within a week following these events, President Abraham Lincoln would be assassinated. Through this powerful visual representation captured by Bridgeman Images' print collection today, we can reflect upon and remember those turbulent times that shaped our nation's destiny forevermore.
