EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Charge of the 3rd Dragoon Guards in Queen Square, Bristol, Monday 31st October 1831" captures a pivotal moment in history. Created by artists Rowbotham and Muller, this artwork depicts the chaotic scene during the Bristol Riots of 1831. In response to the rejection of the second Reform Bill by the House of Lords, an enraged mob took to the streets of Bristol. The rioters, numbering around 500 or 600 young men, unleashed their fury for three days. Their targets included Bishop Robert Gray's palace, private homes and property, as well as significant buildings like the Mansion House and gaol. This particular image showcases a dramatic clash between rioters and soldiers from the renowned 3rd Dragoon Guards. With pencil strokes infused with watercolor and gouache accents on paper, Rowbotham and Muller bring this historical event to life. The intensity is palpable as horses charge forward amidst chaos and destruction. Tragically, four rioters lost their lives during these tumultuous events while four others were hanged despite a petition signed by over ten thousand people pleading for mercy. Preserved within Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in the UK, this artwork serves as a powerful reminder of how social unrest can escalate into violence when political tensions run high. It stands as a testament to both human resilience and our capacity for destruction in times of turmoil.
