Tombstone of the Flavian-era eques alaris (ala cavalryman) Titus Flavius Bassus

3027408 Tombstone of the Flavian-era eques alaris (ala cavalryman) Titus Flavius Bassus, son of Mucala. A Dansala by Roman, (1st century AD); Romisch-Germanisches Museum, Cologne, Germany; (add.info.: A member of the Thracian Dentheletae tribe, he belonged to the Ala Noricorum (originally raised from the Taurisci tribe of Noricum). He died at age 46 after 26 years service, not having advanced beyond the lowest rank. Bassus adopted Roman names, Titus Flavius, indicate that he had gained Roman citizenship, doubtless by serving the required 25 years in the auxilia. The names adopted would normally be those of the emperor ruling at the time of the citizenship award. In this case, they could refer to any of the 3 emperors of the Flavian dynasty (ruled 69-96), Vespasian and his two sons, Titus and Domitian, all of whom carried the same names. The arrangement of the scene, a rider spearing a man (the motif of the Thracian Hero), indicates that Bassus was a Thracian, as does his fathers name. ); Photo eDon Troiani; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the tombstone of Titus Flavius Bassus, a Flavian-era eques alaris (ala cavalryman) from the 1st century AD. The tombstone is currently housed in the Romisch-Germanisches Museum in Cologne, Germany. Titus Flavius Bassus was a member of the Thracian Dentheletae tribe and belonged to the Ala Noricorum, which originated from the Taurisci tribe of Noricum. Despite his 26 years of dedicated service, he unfortunately did not rise beyond the lowest rank before his untimely death at age 46. The adoption of Roman names such as Titus Flavius suggests that Bassus had obtained Roman citizenship through his service in the auxilia for a required period of 25 years. These names were typically chosen based on the ruling emperor at that time. In this case, they could refer to any one of three emperors from the Flavian dynasty: Vespasian and his two sons, Titus and Domitian. The arrangement depicted on Bassus' tombstone features a rider spearing a man, symbolizing the Thracian Hero motif. This further confirms his Thracian heritage along with his father's name. Through this remarkable print by Bridgeman Images sourced from Fine Art Finder, we are transported back in time to honor an individual who dedicated himself to serving Rome while preserving traces of his own cultural identity within an empire known for its assimilation practices.
