EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Mouth of the Saigon River" takes us on a journey back in time to 19th century Saigon, a French colony known as Cochinchina. The illustration, originally published in Appletons Journal in May 1872, offers a glimpse into the daily life of Vietnamese farmers along the coastal coast. In this picturesque scene, we see a bustling river with small boats navigating its waters. On the riverbank stands an array of houses and huts that form a charming village. Surrounding these dwellings are chicken coops and hen houses, highlighting the importance of agriculture in this region. The presence of cows grazing peacefully nearby further emphasizes the agricultural nature of this community. As we gaze at this snapshot from history, it becomes evident that farming played an integral role in sustaining livelihoods here. Beyond its agricultural significance, this image also showcases the fusion between Vietnamese culture and French influence during colonial times. The blend is apparent through both architectural elements seen in some buildings and through references to Song Sai Gon (the old name for Ho Chi Minh City). As we admire this engraving by Walter Rose from Prismatic Pictures' private collection, our imagination transports us to an era long gone but forever preserved within these lines. It serves as a reminder of Vietnam's rich heritage while offering insights into everyday life along one of its most important rivers – the mighty Saigon River.
