EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured engraving from 1835-36 showcases the Bramley and Leeds coach timetable, providing a fascinating glimpse into transportation in 19th century England. The framed notice accompanying the print announces the introduction of a "NEAT COACH" starting on November 1st, offering regular journeys between Bramley and Leeds. Isaac Morley, proprietor of the Cardigan Arms inn in Bramley, took charge of this venture. The image depicts a bustling scene with an illustration of the coach itself. Printed by H. Cullingworth & Son in Boar Lane, Leeds, this artwork measures 39x51 cm and is now housed at Abbey House Museum within Leeds Museums and Art Galleries. During this period, a new westerly turnpike road was constructed through Armley and Bramley to Stanningley. This development paved the way for improved connectivity between these areas. The market coach operated four times on Tuesdays and Saturdays from West Bar's Griffin Inn to Morley's establishment at Bramley. Additionally, it made one journey each day from Monday to Friday except Sundays. Although fares were reportedly set at 9d each way, unfortunately, this particular coach did not enjoy longevity. This historical print offers us insight into early public transportation systems while highlighting Isaac Morley's entrepreneurial spirit as he sought to connect communities through his short-lived but undoubtedly significant coaching service.
