EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Ostensorium with "Paten of St. Bernward", a remarkable piece of art from Lower Saxony, Germany. Crafted by the German School in the 14th century, this ostensorium is made of silver and silver gilt, measuring 34.5x15.9x14 cm. The ostensorium's purpose was to facilitate the display and veneration of ten precious relics, including an exquisite liturgical paten associated with St. Bernward of Hildesheim (d. 1022) and a relic of the True Cross. The paten served as a shallow plate used during Mass for elevating the Eucharist. On the reverse side of this extraordinary reliquary, eight more relics are visible through small silk pouches carefully wrapped around them. Accompanying inscriptions on parchment identify these relics as belonging to Sts. Godehard, Nicholas, Auctor, Silvester, Servatius, John Chrysostom, Alexis, and Lawrence. Acquired by The Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA through purchase from the J. H Wade Fund with an additional gift from Mrs. R. Henry Norweb; this ostensorium holds great historical significance and artistic value.
