EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a German lancer and peasant woman from the 16th century, beautifully captured by artist Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard. The image is based on a print by Hans Guldenmundt, depicting the soldier in an extravagant and flamboyant costume that exudes opulence. His attire includes a luxurious breastplate, puff sleeves, and eye-catching multicolored striped stockings. Handcolored with meticulous detail, this illustration brings to life the vibrant colors and intricate designs of historical costumes. Lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flamenq, and F. Laguillermie for Georges Duplessis' renowned book "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. Duplessis himself was a distinguished curator at the Bibliotheque nationale's Prints department while Lechevallier-Chevignard was an accomplished artist known for his illustrations in books as well as his interior design work for public buildings and churches. This remarkable print offers us a glimpse into the fashion trends of the past while highlighting both the stark contrast between social classes during that era and the artistic talent behind their portrayal. It serves as a testament to our fascination with history's sartorial choices and reminds us of how clothing can be more than just fabric—it can be art itself.
