EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning array of reptiles, each representing different orders within the animal kingdom. The vulnerable Indian softshell turtle, Nilssonia gangetica, gracefully glides through the water while the spectacled caiman, Caiman crocodilus, lurks in its habitat with an air of mystery. The frilled-necked lizard, Chlamydosaurus kingii, proudly displays its unique and intricate neck frill as a form of defense. Amongst these fascinating creatures is the common scaly foot, Pygopus lepidopudus, whose name perfectly describes its distinctive scales that cover its feet. The European glass lizard, Pseudopus apodus, appears almost ethereal with its long and slender body resembling glass. The common viper, Vipera berus , exudes both beauty and danger with its venomous bite. In contrast to this formidable predator is the Physalaemus ephippifer frog which adds a touch of vibrancy to the composition with its bright colors. Lastly but certainly not least is the critically endangered axolotl, Ambystoma mexicanum , a creature that captivates hearts worldwide with its unique ability to regenerate lost limbs. This 19th-century artwork by French School captures not only the diversity but also highlights our responsibility towards conserving these incredible species for future generations. Handcoloured steel engraving printed by F. Chardon from Achille Comtes Musee d'Histoire Naturelle serves as a reminder of nature's wonders and our duty to protect them.
