EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the essence of 'Les pensees' by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a historical counterfeit edition from 1768. The title page of this work, originally edited by Pierre Erialed, features an engraving that adds a touch of intrigue to the piece. Historians have debated the origins of this "pirate" edition, with some attributing it to bookseller Delaire d'Avignon and others questioning this hypothesis. Rousseau, a citizen of Geneva and renowned philosopher, is known for his influential literary works that continue to resonate in modern times. This particular collection of thoughts was drawn up by Prault in 1763, with the counterfeited version appearing alongside the second legal edition later that year. The photograph beautifully captures the intricate details of the title page and brings to life the historical significance of this controversial publication. The composition and lighting highlight every nuance of the engraving, inviting viewers to delve into Rousseau's world and ponder on his profound musings. Patrice Cartier has skillfully captured not just a simple image but a piece of history frozen in time. This print serves as a reminder of Rousseau's enduring legacy and invites us to reflect on his timeless wisdom.
