The Victoria Court-Martial on Board HMS Hibernia at Malta, Examination of Admiral Markham, 19 July 1893
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating engraving by Thomas Walter Wilson that depicts a significant moment in naval history. The image showcases the intense interrogation of Admiral Markham during the court-martial proceedings. The scene takes place on board the HMS Hibernia, where Admiral Michael Culme-Seymour, newly appointed Commander of the Mediterranean Fleet, questions Admiral Markham about his actions leading to the tragic sinking of HMS Victoria. Acting under orders from Vice-Admiral Sir George Tryon, Markham turned his ship but unintentionally collided with Tryon's vessel, resulting in its devastating loss and all lives on board. Markham completed his tour in the Mediterranean before facing a period on half pay without command as punishment for this unfortunate incident. Despite this setback, he was later promoted to Vice-Admiral in August 1897. This historical event highlights not only the consequences faced by those responsible for maritime disasters but also emphasizes the importance of accountability within naval operations. Wilson's detailed engraving captures both tension and drama as it immortalizes this pivotal moment in European naval history. This print serves as a reminder of past tragedies and their impact on military personnel while also acknowledging their dedication to duty and service to their respective nations.
