EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled "Syrnium Albogularis" was created by J. T. Bowen in 1850 and is part of the Jackson Collection of American Lithographs at the Free Library of Philadelphia. The print showcases a stunning White-throated Screech Owl perched on a branch, meticulously engraved with intricate details. The artist, William E. Hitchcock, beautifully captures the essence of this magnificent bird through his skillful hand-coloring technique. The owl's piercing yellow eyes seem to gaze into your soul while its feathers display an array of subtle shades that blend seamlessly with its surroundings. Displayed alongside other prints in the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences' second series, this artwork provides a valuable scientific record for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts alike. John Cassin, an esteemed American ornithologist and head of the Academy's bird department during that time period, contributed these taxonomic names. As you admire this lithograph, take note that it represents more than just a beautiful image; it symbolizes centuries-old efforts to document and understand our natural world. It serves as a reminder to appreciate both the aesthetic beauty and scientific significance found within nature's creations.
