Branch Hill Pond, Hampstead, 1828 (oil on canvas)

499825 Branch Hill Pond, Hampstead, 1828 (oil on canvas)
by Constable, John (1776-1837); 89x105.5 (framed) 60.6x78.1 (unframed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: From 1819 to 1826, Constable rented a summer house at Hampstead, a quarrying district on the northern outskirts of London, where he made drawings, oil sketches, and paintings of the surrounding landscape.
In both this painting and the nearby sketch by Constable, the atmosphere plays a dominant role. The artist meticulously observed and recorded cloud formations, weather conditions, and natural light effects; he believed an accurate rendering of these constantly shifting elements could transmit the vitality and freshness that was so important to his vision of the English countryside.
Constables insistently overcast skies, with rain or the promise of rain, were distinctly British, and his treatment of them is how he distanced himself from the more temperate Italianate landscapes, seen in the golden glow of sky in paintings by Richard Wilson, Thomas Gainsborough, and John Martin also in this gallery that many still considered the ideal of natural beauty.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases John Constable's masterpiece, "Branch Hill Pond, Hampstead, 1828". Painted with oil on canvas, this artwork measures 89x105.5 cm when framed and 60.6x78.1 cm without the frame. It is currently housed in the prestigious Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. During his stay at a summer house in Hampstead from 1819 to 1826, Constable immersed himself in capturing the beauty of the surrounding landscape through drawings, oil sketches, and paintings. In this particular piece as well as a nearby sketch by Constable, the atmosphere takes center stage. The artist meticulously observed and recorded cloud formations, weather conditions, and natural light effects to convey the vitality and freshness he envisioned for English countryside scenes. Constable's signature overcast skies with rain or hints of it were distinctly British elements that set him apart from other artists who favored more temperate Italianate landscapes. By portraying these atmospheric conditions so vividly, he aimed to distance himself from prevailing ideals of natural beauty represented by painters like Richard Wilson, Thomas Gainsborough, and John Martin. The Leonard C. Hanna Jr Fund acquired this remarkable artwork for its collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art. This print allows art enthusiasts worldwide to appreciate Constable's mastery while also highlighting Bridgeman Images' commitment to preserving fine art heritage through their licensing services.
