EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Chanakya and king Chandragupta" transports us back in time to ancient India, capturing a significant moment in history. Painted with watercolors on delicate paper, this artwork by the Indian School showcases the legendary figures of Chanakya and King Chandragupta. King Chandragupta Maurya, who reigned from 322 BC until his retirement in 298 BC, was not only the founder of the mighty Maurya Empire but also the first emperor to unify most of Greater India into one powerful state. His voluntary abdication in favor of his son Bindusara marked an extraordinary act of selflessness. Chanakya, also known as Kautilya or Vishnugupta, played a pivotal role in shaping Chandragupta's destiny. A revered teacher, philosopher, royal advisor, statesman, and theorist; Chanakya's wisdom guided young Chandragupta towards greatness. As a professor at Taxila University specializing in economics and political science, he recognized Chandragupta's potential early on and masterminded his rise to power. The establishment of the Mauryan Empire under their leadership was an unprecedented achievement that left an indelible mark on Indian history. This empire became the first recorded kingdom to rule over most parts of the vast Indian subcontinent.
