EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Nakula at the poisoned lake, Hindu myth" takes us on a visual journey into the rich world of Hindu mythology. Dating back to the early 20th century, this illustration showcases Nakula, a legendary warrior from Hindu lore. In this scene, Nakula follows his companion Sahadeva to a mysterious lake only to find him lifeless. As he approaches the water's edge, an ominous crane named Baka warns him of its deadly poison. The bird challenges Nakula with a riddle and cautions that failure to answer correctly would result in death. However, driven by curiosity or perhaps arrogance, Nakula dismisses the crane's warning and defiantly drinks from the tainted waters. Tragically, he meets the same fate as Sahadeva - succumbing to its lethal effects. The artist behind this postcard skillfully captures both the mythical atmosphere and intricate details of this ancient tale. With vibrant colors and meticulous brushstrokes, they bring forth not just an illustration but also a glimpse into India's cultural heritage. This image serves as a reminder of India's colonial past during which British Raj exerted influence over South Asia. It symbolizes how legends like Nakula continue to captivate imaginations across generations despite being part of an empire that once ruled over their land.
