Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Untitled, from the series Christmas Fare from the Empire" by F. C. Harrison takes us back to a significant era in British history. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Eyre & Spottiswoode for HMSO, this artwork is part of Manchester Art Gallery's remarkable collection of artist-designed posters. During the 1920s and 1930s, the British government's Empire Marketing Board aimed to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire across its territories. This particular poster campaign played a crucial role in shaping consumer consciousness towards empire-made products. With over 200 acquired posters, Manchester Art Gallery became a custodian of these powerful images that depicted people, places, and products associated with the vast empire. However, viewing these posters through a contemporary lens raises thought-provoking questions about the legacy of imperialism today. While they showcase strong imagery representing different aspects of the empire's influence, they also confront uncomfortable beliefs held during that time. This specific lithograph captures an untitled scene from "Christmas Fare from the Empire" inviting viewers to explore how festive traditions were intertwined with imperial connections. The image serves as a reminder of Britain's complex relationship with its former colonies and invites contemplation on how historical legacies continue to shape our present-day perspectives. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery under Bridgeman Images' copyright license, this photograph print offers both artistic beauty and an opportunity for introspection into Britain's imperial past.
