EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1770, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Paris. The illustration, featured in "Paris Through The Ages" by Hoffbauer, showcases the magnificent view of the Temple. This medieval fortress was constructed by the Knights Templars in the thirteenth century and later served as a prison during the French Revolution, housing even members of the Royal family. The image captures a bustling street scene with horses and coaches traversing through its cobbled paths. The architectural details are exquisite, showcasing various entrances such as Entree du prieure and Entree du Palais. The towering Tour de Cesar stands proudly amidst it all, while nearby lies Eglise du Temple and Palais du Grand Prieur. It is fascinating to note that this grand structure met its demise at Napoleon's command in 1811 when it was demolished. However, this print allows us to cherish its existence from a time long gone. With vibrant colors brought to life through lithography techniques employed by Hoffbauer himself, this artwork transports us back to eighteenth-century Paris. It serves as an invaluable historical document capturing not only architectural marvels but also shedding light on significant events that unfolded within these walls. Displayed here courtesy of Bridgeman Images from Fine Art Finder's private collection, this remarkable piece invites viewers to immerse themselves in Parisian history and appreciate the artistry behind preserving our past for future generations.
