EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lithograph captures the Kandahar Gate in Kelaat during the year 1839. The artwork, created by Sir Keith A. Jackson, offers a glimpse into the historical events that unfolded during the 1st Afghan War (1839-1842). Following the installation of Shah Shuja as Emir to replace Dost Mohammed, British forces believed they had secured victory and began preparations to withdraw from Kabul. However, on their journey back to India, they encountered constant attacks from Baluchi Khans of Khelat who targeted their supply lines. In response, Sir John Keane's Army of the Indus launched a punitive expedition against them. The image showcases the aftermath of fierce fighting in the surrounding hills as British soldiers successfully stormed and captured Khelat city. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring this historic moment to life, highlighting both its significance and brutality. Published in Views in Affghaunistaun etc from sketches taken during the Campaigns of the Army of Indus by W. L Walton after Captain Sir Keith A Jackson's original drawings, this print serves as a testament to both artistic skill and historical documentation. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, this remarkable lithograph provides viewers with an opportunity to reflect upon a pivotal chapter in Afghanistan's history while appreciating its artistic merit.
