5920136 Kandahar from the South, 1839 circa (coloured lithograph) by Jackson, Sir Keith A. (fl.1838); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Kandahar from the South, 1839 circa.
Coloured lithograph from Views in Affghaunistaun from sketches taken during the Campaigns of the Army of the Indus, by W L Walton after Captain Sir Keith A Jackson, Bt, 4th (Queens Own) Light Dragoons, published by W H Allen and Co and T McLean.
In spring 1839 a 12, 000 strong British-Indian force, the Army of the Indus under Sir John Keane, forced the Bolan Pass and captured Kandahar without a fight in April. Kandahar was the southern capital of Afghanistan and controlled by the brother of Emir Dost Mohammed. When the British advanced on the city he fled north to join his brother in Kabul. EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print of "Kandahar from the South, 1839 circa" takes us back to a significant moment in history. This coloured lithograph, created by Sir Keith A. Jackson, offers a glimpse into the landscape and atmosphere of Kandahar during the mid-19th century. In this image, we see Kandahar as it appeared in 1839, with its majestic architecture and bustling streets. The artist's attention to detail brings out the vibrant colors that adorn the cityscape. From minarets piercing through the sky to intricately designed buildings lining the horizon, every element showcases the rich cultural heritage of Afghanistan. This artwork is part of a larger collection titled "Views in Affghaunistaun" which documents scenes captured during campaigns led by the British-Indian Army of Indus under Sir John Keane. It was during these campaigns that Kandahar was captured without resistance from Emir Dost Mohammed's brother, who had fled north to Kabul. The lithograph not only serves as an artistic representation but also provides valuable historical insights into British involvement in Afghanistan at that time. It highlights their strategic maneuvers and alliances forged with tribal leaders to establish Shah Shuja as their chosen Emir. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece, we are transported back in time - witnessing both beauty and political intrigue within one frame. The print stands as a testament to how art can capture moments frozen in history for generations to come.
