EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite title page of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John from the Visigothic-Mozarabic Bible of St. Isidore. Created by the Spanish School in the 10th century using tempera on vellum, this artwork is a true testament to medieval craftsmanship. The title page, found on folio 402v of this rare manuscript known as Biblia de Leon or Mozarabic Bible, dates back to June 19,960 at the Monastery of Valeranica. It bears witness to meticulous attention to detail with its intricate Gothic illuminations and delicate calligraphy. Notably significant are the names recorded within this masterpiece - Florencio as the miniaturist and Sancho as the calligrapher. Their contributions add depth and richness to an already remarkable piece. Containing all books from both Old and New Testaments, this bible also features marginal annotations in Latin and Arabic languages. Its historical value cannot be overstated; it stands as one of the most precious medieval manuscripts in existence today. Preserved within Archivo Capitular de la Real Colegiata de San Isidoro in Leon, Spain; this image captures not only religious symbolism but also serves as a reminder of human ingenuity throughout history.
