EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Coffin of Senbi, a remarkable artifact from ancient Egypt's Middle Kingdom. Crafted during the Egyptian 12th Dynasty, specifically between 1918 and 1859 BC, this coffin is made of gessoed and painted cedar wood. Standing at an impressive size of 55x213x70 cm, it now resides in the prestigious Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. During the Middle Kingdom era, rectangular coffins like this one were commonly used for burials. The lid would be placed on top of the box-shaped structure which housed the mummy inside. It was customary to position the deceased on their left side facing east – symbolizing their journey towards eternal life. The image provides a glimpse into this fascinating funerary tradition that held great significance in ancient Egypt. The open coffin reveals its empty state but retains its aura as an artifact connected to death and afterlife beliefs. Its oblong shape and wooden construction add to its allure as a tangible link to a bygone era. Gifted by the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust, this extraordinary piece offers us insight into both artistic craftsmanship and spiritual practices from over four thousand years ago. Through Bridgeman Images' lens, we are transported back in time to marvel at this enduring testament to human history.
