Portrait of a gentleman (circa 1670), c.1670 (oil on canvas)
7338072 Portrait of a gentleman (circa 1670), c.1670 (oil on canvas) by Unknown Artist, (17th century); 17.8x15.2 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: unknown
This small portrait on panel was acquired in 1933 as 'Portrait of the artist' by Willem van de Velde the Elder. Despite the initials 'WVV' on the portfolio the sitter does not resemble van de Velde as he appears in the engraving by Gerard Sibelius after the portrait by Kneller in the collection of Sir Edward Walpole. From the dress it is possible to date the portrait to around 1670, rather than 1650, as previously thought. Because of the background of sea and shipping it is possible that the sitter is another marine artist, perhaps born around 1630.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait of a gentleman from circa 1670 is a true masterpiece that captures the essence of the 17th century. The unknown artist behind this oil on canvas painting has expertly depicted the sitter in exquisite detail, showcasing the fashion and style of the time.
Despite initial confusion over its subject, it is now believed that this portrait does not depict Willem van de Velde the Elder as previously thought. Instead, based on the attire and background featuring sea and shipping elements, it is speculated that the sitter may have been another marine artist born around 1630.
The vibrant colors and intricate details in this painting transport us back to a bygone era filled with elegance and sophistication. The hat worn by the gentleman adds a touch of flair to his ensemble, reflecting his status as a merchant or possibly even a ship captain.
This artwork is not just a mere depiction of one man; it serves as a window into history, offering us a glimpse into life during the 17th century. It reminds us of an age when artistry flourished and individuality was celebrated through fashion and portraiture.
