The 'York', c.1674 (graphite, grey wash)
7342299 The 'York', c.1674 (graphite, grey wash) by Velde, Willem van de, the Elder (1611-93); 36x68.9 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Elder
This is a ship portrait, viewed from the port quarter. Notably, the ship has square decorated ports. It is inscribed de Jorck, and is dated on the stern: 1674. It has been signed by Willem van de Velde the Younger: W V V (J). In spite of the signature and inscription, which is considered to be in the Younger's hand, the drawing has been tentatively attributed to Willem van de Velde the Elder. The smoothness of the wash along the side is perhaps in the manner of the Younger but little else is. The large correction in the waterline at the luff, the exaggerated length for the amount of stern showing, the untidiness of the pencil-work, the figures on deck and the flick of pencil underneath the bow to suggest water, are all characteristic of the Elder.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the essence of The 'York', a ship portrait from 1674 by Willem van de Velde, the Elder. The graphite and grey wash medium used in this piece brings out the intricate details of the vessel, viewed from the port quarter. One can't help but admire the square decorated ports and the inscription "de Jorck" along with the date on the stern.
The signature of Willem van de Velde, the Younger adds to its authenticity, although there is speculation that it may have been created by his father. The smoothness of the wash and other characteristics suggest a possible collaboration between father and son in this masterpiece.
From the large correction in waterline to the figures on deck, every detail in this artwork speaks volumes about maritime history. The flick of pencil underneath bow to suggest water adds a touch of realism to an already captivating scene.
Displayed at National Maritime Museum in London, UK, this print is not just a visual treat for art enthusiasts but also serves as a historical documentation of naval architecture during that era. It truly stands as a testament to Willem van de Velde's talent and mastery in capturing nautical beauty on paper.
