Ensign Johnny Newcome's Misadventures - A Lesson in Excess
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this handcoloured copperplate engraving by Thomas Rowlandson, we are transported back to the early 19th century and witness a comical scene from "The Military Adventures of Johnny Newcome". The image depicts Ensign Johnny Newcome, a young British officer, eagerly attempting to emulate his fellow comrades by indulging in the vices of smoking cigars and drinking grog. Amidst the convivial atmosphere at the officers' table, it becomes apparent that Ensign Newcome has underestimated his tolerance for these newfound pleasures. As he succumbs to excessive smoking and imbibing copious amounts of rum-infused grog, poor Ensign Newcome finds himself overwhelmed by their intoxicating effects. With great amusement (and perhaps some sympathy), we observe as Ensign Newcome leans over the table, overcome with nausea. His face flushed and contorted in discomfort, he regrettably succumbs to alcohol poisoning and vomits amidst an array of half-empty glasses and tobacco paraphernalia. This satirical portrayal serves as a cautionary tale against unchecked indulgence during times of war. It reminds us that even within the ranks of esteemed military officers like those depicted here - including notable figures such as Colonel David Roberts - one must exercise moderation when partaking in life's pleasures. Through Rowlandson's masterful artistry, this print captures both the humor and folly inherent in human nature. It stands as a testament to our universal tendency towards excesses while also providing insight into social customs prevalent during the Napoleonic Wars era.
