EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in British military history during the Boer War. Taken around 1900, it shows British soldiers from the 6th Division aboard railway wagons as they prepare to embark on their campaign led by Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Kelly-Kenny. Trains played a crucial role in this conflict, enabling the movement of troops and supplies across the vast distances of South Africa. The soldiers depicted here are members of the Wiltshire regiment, known as "Tommy Atkins" who were off to participate in Roberts Campaign. The image provides a glimpse into how these brave infantrymen traveled during this time period. Packed tightly within the wagons, they appear ready for whatever challenges lie ahead. Their expressions convey determination and resolve. This stereoscopic photograph is part of a collection titled "South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1". It was published by Underwood and Underwood, renowned for their works in photography during that era. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, this print serves as a testament to the important role railways played in warfare at that time. It also reminds us of the sacrifices made by these soldiers who fought valiantly for their country's cause.
