EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of Lord Roberts and his escort of Imperial Yeomanry entering Kroonstadt, South Africa in 1900. The image, taken by Underwood & Underwood, showcases the significant role played by these soldiers during the Boer War. In December 1899, following setbacks experienced during Black Week, the British government realized that more manpower was needed to defeat the Boers. As a response, they established the Imperial Yeomanry on Christmas Eve of that year. This new force consisted not only of existing county yeomanry regiments but also included a substantial number of volunteers. The photograph depicts Lord Roberts positioned third from left as he leads his escort into Kroonstadt. A wagon and other vehicles accompany them on this important mission. The scene is captured with remarkable clarity through stereoscopic photography techniques employed by Works and Sun Sculpture Studios. Part of a collection entitled "South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1" published by Underwood and Underwood in circa 1900, this particular print now resides at London's National Army Museum. It serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice exhibited by these officers and soldiers during one of history's most significant conflicts.
