EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historical moment in De Aar, South Africa, in 1899. The image showcases a scene of transport wagons belonging to the Advance Camp of the 6th Division of Her Majesty's Army during the Boer War. The photograph is part of a stereoscopic series by Underwood & Underwood, an American firm known for their extensive documentation of the war. Stereographs were popular at the time and consisted of two identical photographs that, when viewed through a special instrument called a stereoscope, created a three-dimensional effect. By mounting these photographs on thick curved cards, Underwood & Underwood enhanced the illusion of depth and realism. This particular image is one among 89 stereoscopic cards titled "South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1" published around 1900. The National Army Museum in London now houses this valuable piece from history. It serves as a reminder not only of significant military operations but also as evidence of technological advancements in photography during that era. Bridgeman Images has made this photo available for viewing without commercial use restrictions. Its preservation allows us to appreciate and reflect upon our shared past while honoring those who served during times of conflict.
