EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "10th (Duke of Cambridges Own) [Bengal] Lancers, Malta, 1878" depicts a significant moment in history when Indian troops were deployed to Europe for the first time. Painted by Gianni, Girolamo in oil on canvas, this artwork is housed at the National Army Museum in London. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and subsequent Congress of Berlin, the presence of Indian troops served as a political statement for the British Empire. Although they did not engage in any combat during their time in Malta, their arrival bolstered Britain's position on an international stage. This particular image showcases one squadron from the 10th Bengal Lancers serving alongside the 9th Bengal Cavalry. These regiments were originally established by Major William Hodson in 1857 and later merged to form the renowned 4th Duke of Cambridges Own Hodsons Horse. The painting captures officers and soldiers mounted on horses within their encampment. The scene exudes a sense of colonial power and imperial grandeur as these brave men proudly represent both India and Britain. The vibrant colors bring life to this historical moment while highlighting the intricate details of each horseback rider. As we admire this remarkable piece, we are transported back to a time when military might was displayed through equestrian prowess. It serves as a testament to both British imperialism and India's contribution to global affairs during that era.
