EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning array of bird species from the 19th century. The composition features six magnificent birds, each with its own unique charm and grace. At the forefront is the elegant Phenicopterer or Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), standing tall with its vibrant pink plumage creating a striking contrast against the serene background. Next to it stands the majestic White stork (Ciconia alba), exuding an air of regality as it gazes into the distance. Its counterpart, the Black stork (Ciconia migra), adds a touch of mystery with its dark feathers and enigmatic presence. Further along, we encounter the Marabout (Leptoptilus crumenifer) - a large bird known for its distinctive long beak and feathery head crest. It stands proudly alongside two herons; one being the graceful White heron (Ardea cinerea) and the other being the vibrant Red heron (Ardea purpurea). Both herons showcase their elegance through their slender bodies and delicate postures. This remarkable engraving was originally featured in "Natural History of birds", published in Milan in 1873 by an unknown artist. Preserved within this private collection, Stefano Bianchetti has beautifully captured these avian wonders for us to admire today. As we gaze upon this artwork, we are transported back in time to appreciate nature's beauty through these exquisite feathered creatures.
