This silver medal depicts the English lion trampling on an Irish wolfhound and clawing at a French cockerel. The lion had been a symbol of English royalty since the twelfth century, while the wolfhound was an ancient icon of the Kings of Ireland. The cockerel has long been a symbol of France thanks to its qualities of vigilance, courage and fighting spirit. Originally a royal symbol, the bird became a popular emblem during the French Revolution, but fell out of favour during NapoleonAs reign. He was not convinced that a farmyard animal was a suitable regal emblem and replaced it with an eagle.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable medal commemorating the Battle of Aughrim in 1691. Created by an English School artist from the 17th century, this silver medal is currently housed at the National Army Museum in London. The design depicts a powerful English lion triumphantly trampling on an Irish wolfhound while fiercely clawing at a French cockerel. The Battle of Aughrim was a significant event where King William III's army dealt a devastating blow to both the Irish and French forces. Fought in July 1691, it remains one of the bloodiest conflicts ever witnessed on Irish soil, claiming over 7,000 lives. This battle marked the end of Irish Catholic Jacobite resistance against King William III's rule. The Latin inscription on this historic medal translates to "Thus with one claw he strikes two. The rebels and the French defeated near Aughrim". Symbolically, the lion represents English royalty dating back to medieval times, while the wolfhound symbolizes ancient kingship in Ireland. As for the cockerel, it has long been associated with France due to its qualities of vigilance, courage, and fighting spirit. Originally used as a royal emblem during Napoleon's reign replaced it with an eagle as he deemed farmyard animals unsuitable for regal symbolism. This extraordinary photograph captures not only historical significance but also artistic craftsmanship that immortalizes this pivotal moment in history.
