EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Yedo, present-day Tokyo, in the 19th century. The image showcases a pharmacy shop where a skilled pharmacist diligently attends to his duties with the assistance of his apprentice. Behind a wooden lacquer grid, they work before the eyes of curious onlookers who eagerly await their turn for service. The scene is further enlivened by barges patiently waiting outside on the street, ready to be served and pay for their purchases. In an intriguing display of trust and convenience, customers pass their money through the bars as payment. It is fascinating to observe that every bourgeois carries a medicine box attached to their belt. These boxes are adorned with different compartments stacked upon each other, containing various remedies such as opiaceous pills, mint oil powder, and white sugar powder. Interestingly enough, these individuals garnish their own medicinal needs without requiring a medical prescription. This remarkable engraving was created by an unknown artist during Aime Humbert's travels in Japan between 1863-1864. It was later published in "Le tour du monde" a renowned journal under Edouard Charton's direction in 1868 Paris. Leonard de Selva beautifully captures this historical moment through his lens and presents it here for our appreciation. As we gaze upon this photograph print from Fine Art Finder's private collection today, we can't help but marvel at how much has changed since then while also recognizing some enduring aspects of human nature across time and cultures.
