Photograph, India, 1890 circa.
Polo was popular with British and Indian cavalry and infantry regiments alike. Though participation in the sport always remained less expensive in India than Britain, by the 1920s it was recommended that regimental polo funds should be instituted to enable even junior British and Indian subalterns to play the game without getting into debt.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in the world of polo. Taken around 1890, it showcases a victorious polo team proudly posing with their well-deserved trophies. The identity of the photographer remains unknown, but this remarkable image is now preserved at the National Army Museum in London. Polo was not only popular among British cavalry and infantry regiments but also gained immense popularity in India during this time. This photograph provides a glimpse into the sport's widespread appeal as both British and Indian players came together to compete on the field. Intriguingly, despite its growing popularity, playing polo could be financially burdensome for many junior British and Indian subalterns. By the 1920s, regimental polo funds were recommended to ensure that even those with limited means could participate without falling into debt. This particular photo comes from an album compiled by an officer of the 40th Pathans regiment around 1890. It is one of 62 photographs capturing various aspects of life during that era. As we admire this portrait, we are transported back to a time when camaraderie, skill, and triumph united individuals from different backgrounds on the exhilarating grounds of polo matches.
