EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the telescope used by General Sir John Moore during the Peninsular War in 1809. Crafted with exquisite detail, this brass and mahogany instrument was manufactured by Jacob Abraham of Bath specifically for Moore's use on the battlefield. Born in Glasgow in 1761, Moore had an illustrious military career that spanned several continents and conflicts. From fighting in the American War of Independence to serving in Egypt and Sweden, he proved himself as a skilled and courageous leader. In 1808, he was sent to Spain to reinforce the British Army during the Peninsular War. The telescope played a crucial role during one of Moore's most challenging moments - his winter retreat from Astorga to Corunna. Faced with defeat at the hands of superior French forces, Moore led his troops through treacherous mountain terrain under harsh conditions. His intention was to evacuate his army by sea but encountered fierce opposition along the way. Although ultimately victorious in battle against the French at Corunna, tragedy struck when Moore lost his life on January 16th, 1809. This telescope serves as a poignant reminder of his bravery and sacrifice. Displayed at London's National Army Museum, this artifact not only represents an important piece of military history but also pays tribute to a remarkable leader who gave everything for his country.
