Edgecombe, Is... dedicated to Sir John Barrow..., 1856 (aquatint & etching, coloured) by Knell, William Adolphus (1805-75); 57.4x77.2 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Knell, William Adolphus [artist]; Hunt, Charles [engraver]; Rudolph Ackermann [publishers]
Starboard view of two-masted paddle steamer Geyser, under steam but also with foresail hoisted. A British ensign is flying from the mizzen mast gaff, while three signal flags are hoisted on the main mast. Two guns starboard can be seen on deck as can a small tender hoisted on the davitts. A small sailing vessel with just its top sails hoisted is visible just off the port bow. A four-man cutter, with two naval officers and a cox is going in the opposite direction in the foreground. The coast is clearly visible with a large house, which appears to be Mount Edgecombe, looking out over the Plymouth Sound.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning aquatint and etching print captures the majestic H.M. Steam Frigate Geyser off the coast of Mt. Edgecombe in 1856, a true masterpiece dedicated to Sir John Barrow. The intricate details of the two-masted paddle steamer Geyser are brought to life by artist William Adolphus Knell, showcasing the British ensign flying proudly from the mizzen mast gaff.
As we gaze upon this historical scene, we are transported back in time to witness a moment frozen in history - with three signal flags hoisted on the main mast and two guns visible on deck. The coastline of Plymouth Sound is beautifully depicted, with Mount Edgecombe standing tall in the background.
In the foreground, a four-man cutter can be seen gliding through the water, adding a sense of movement and action to this maritime tableau. The skillful use of color brings depth and vibrancy to every detail, making it feel as though we could step right into this scene from over a century ago.
This print is not just a work of art; it is a window into an era when steam frigates ruled the seas and naval officers sailed with courage and determination. It pays homage to both the craftsmanship of Knell's family lineage of marine artists and to Sir John Barrow himself, immortalizing their contributions to maritime history for generations to come.
