EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a watercolour painting titled "H. M. 53rd Foot, c. 1845" by Ensign Bethune Donald Grant, dating back to the mid-19th century. The artwork is housed at the National Army Museum in London and provides a glimpse into the history of the renowned 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot. Arriving in India in 1844, this regiment played a significant role in various military campaigns during that era. They valiantly fought in the 1st Sikh War (1845-1846), participating in crucial battles such as Aliwal and Sobraon. Additionally, they were present at the decisive Battle of Gujerat (1849) during the Second Sikh War (1848-1849). The artist behind this masterpiece, Donald Bethune Grant, was born into a family with medical background; his father being a surgeon and his mother named Elizabeth Nicholson Agnes Hayes. Rising through ranks to become Lieutenant in the esteemed 35th Bengal Native Infantry, Grant's talent extended beyond his military duties. Tragically, Grant's life was cut short when he passed away on November 30th, 1854 while stationed in Agra. Preserved for posterity at the National Army Museum, this remarkable artwork offers us an intimate connection to an important chapter of British military history and serves as a testament to both Grant's artistic prowess and his service to his country.
