Pattern 1853 Enfield. 577 inch Percussion Rifle Musket, Windsor Pattern, 1856

5920987 Pattern 1853 Enfield.577 inch Percussion Rifle Musket, Windsor Pattern, 1856 by American School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Pattern 1853 Enfield.577 inch Percussion Rifle Musket, Windsor Pattern, 1856.
Manufactured under contract to British War Department by Robbins and Lawrence, Windsor, Vermont, USA, 1856.
During the Crimean War (1854-1856) there was a shortfall of Enfield rifle muskets. Insufficient numbers were being produced in the United Kingdom and, despite a contract for their manufacture being placed in Belgium, further assistance from both the United States and France was sought. An American contact was swiftly set up in February 1855 for 25, 000 US rifle muskets, altered to the Enfield bore, to be made by Robbins and Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont. Enfield rifle muskets made in Britain were variously stamped on the lock A ENFIELDA - for those made at the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield - A LACA for those manufactured by the London Armoury Company or A TOWERA for other contract gunmakers. The American produced Enfields were stamped with A WINDSORA on the lock.
Unforeseen financial difficulties at the company and complaints in Britain that the American Enfields were of inferior quality resulted in a total of only some 16, 000 rifle muskets being produced in the US for the British Army.); eNational Army Museum; American, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a Pattern 1853 Enfield . 577 inch Percussion Rifle Musket, Windsor Pattern, manufactured in 1856 by Robbins and Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont. This particular rifle musket was made under contract for the British War Department during the Crimean War when there was a shortage of Enfield rifle muskets. The British Army sought assistance from both the United States and France to meet their demand for rifles. In February 1855, a contact was established with Robbins and Lawrence to produce 25,000 US rifle muskets altered to the Enfield bore. These American-made Enfields were stamped with "A WINDSOR" on the lock as opposed to the stamps used on those made in Britain. However, unforeseen financial difficulties at Robbins and Lawrence coupled with complaints about inferior quality resulted in only around 16,000 rifle muskets being produced for the British Army. This print is housed at the National Army Museum in London and showcases an important piece of military history. The image allows us to appreciate not only the craftsmanship of this specific firearm but also its significance during a time when international cooperation was necessary to meet wartime demands.
