EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1622, during the reign of Louis XIII in France. The image showcases two magnificent architectural marvels - The Louvre and the Hotel du Petit-Bourbon. In this colorful lithograph created by Theodor Josef Hubert Hoffbauer in 1885, we are transported to a time when these structures stood side by side along the banks of the River Seine. The Hotel du Petit-Bourbon, located on the right-hand side of the picture, served as the Parisian townhouse for the prestigious Bourbon family. Constructed in the 14th century, it continued to hold court ceremonies even after Louis XIII and his family made their primary residence at The Louvre following their ascension to power in 1589. Notably, this historic building witnessed significant events such as Louis XIII's marriage ceremony and meetings of Estates General in 1614 and 1615. It also became Molière's first theater venue in 1658 when he performed with his troupe there. Sadly, due to urban development plans for Perrault's colonnade at The Louvre, Hotel du Petit-Bourbon was eventually demolished during the mid-1660s. However, through this remarkable print from Bridgeman Images' collection at Musee Carnavalet in Paris, we can still appreciate its grandeur and imagine ourselves stepping into a world where French royalty once walked its halls. This photograph not only captures stunning architecture but also preserves a piece of history that shaped French culture and literature during one of its most influential periods.
