EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lithograph from the 19th century showcases the iconic Nidd Viaduct, a remarkable feat of engineering on the Leeds and Thirsk Railway near Knaresborough. The print, created by William Frederick Faviell, offers a glimpse into the past as it depicts a train crossing the viaduct over the picturesque River Nidd. Measuring an impressive 448 feet in length and towering at 104 feet high, with arches spanning 50 feet each, this architectural marvel was brought to life by engineers Thomas Grainger and John Bourne. The construction work was undertaken by M. Faviell & Son contractors. The completion of this viaduct in 1851 marked an important milestone for both railway companies involved. The Leeds and Thirsk Railway Company changed its name to Leeds Northern Railway shortly after its completion. This historic moment is beautifully captured in Faviell's artwork. Surrounded by serene countryside scenery, including a stable block and barns that add charm to the rural landscape, this image also features grazing cattle and a flock of sheep peacefully roaming nearby. It provides us with a glimpse into daily life during that era when agriculture played such an integral role in British society. Preserved within Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust's collection, this print serves as a testament to Britain's rich railway heritage while showcasing Faviell's artistic talent. With its vibrant colours and meticulous attention to detail, it transports viewers back in time to witness an extraordinary piece of history unfold before their eyes.
